PORTLAND THORNS
Founded in 2012, Portland Thorns FC have set the standard for fan support and on-field success in women’s soccer since its inaugural 2013 season. One of the world’s most supported women’s soccer clubs, Portland has led the league in attendance for eight seasons and set a new club playoff attendance record last year with 25,218 fans supporting Thorns FC in the 2023 semifinal match at Providence Park. Thorns FC have won the NWSL Championship a league-record three times (2013, 2017, 2022) and finished as runners-up in 2018. The club has made the postseason a league-high nine times and has won the NWSL Shield in 2016 and 2021.

THE ROLE:
The IDP Coach is a new position designed to provide all first team players with the appropriate resources for development in our environment. This individual will be responsible and be evaluated for the individual development of players.
WHAT YOU’LL BE UP TO:

INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT PLANS
Lead, maintain and manage the creation and delivery of Individual Development Plans (IDP) aligned to player development needs.
Key Stakeholders*: Head Coach / Technical Staff / 1st Team Analyst / Director of Performance/ Technical Director
Deliverables: Develop an in-depth knowledge of the Thorns One Club Model and the Head Coaches Game Model. Develop and maintain a deep understanding of player strengths and weaknesses to align with technical staff on the development needs of the players. Build a comprehensive and holistic IDP for each player, including data insights (technical and performance) as well as video. Collaberate with performance staff to deliver on-field sessions to ensure high quality, safe and sustainable sessions.
LOAN/NATIONAL TEAM PLAYER TRACKING
Develop and lead a process to track and monitor any Thorns players out on loan or with respective national teams and provide regular feedback and insights to Thorns internal staff
Key Stakeholders*: Head Coach / Technical Director / Director of Scouting / Director of Performance
Deliverables: Build a comprehensive system to track player development and performance with loan club or national team. Including on-going data insights into playing time, positional KPI’s supported with video. Provide regular updates to Technical Director. Lead and conduct frequent IDP meetings with player.
ACADEMY TRANSITION LEAD
Develop and lead a process to track and monitor any Thorns Academy players who are selected as an Accelerated Development Player (ADP). Lead and manage ADP schedule and involvement in the 1st team environment.
Key Stakeholders*: Head Coach / Technical Director / Academy Director
Deliverables: Build a robust system to track player progression in academy environment. Build and manage the players annual training plan, including involvement in 1st team environment. Create and maintain an IDP for select players across academy and 1st team environments.
NON-ROSTERED PLAYER TRAINING
Lead, direct and manage all non-rostered player training, including scheduling, session development and delivery.
Key Stakeholders*: Head Coach / Director of Performance & Medical / Director of Operations
Deliverables: Build and manage training schedule for players who are not rostered to game day rosters. Design and deliver player specific sessions aligned to IDP’s, working closely with performance staff to ensure physical outcomes are met.
WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A THORN:
- Coaching expertise: Strong coaching background with experience coaching senior professionals or U20/U23 internationals / college players. Previous IDP coaching experience is preferred.
- Licensure: B License minimum, A License preferred.
- Leadership: Strong organizational skills to manage multiple IDPs. Excellent communication skills to collaborate with staff across departments.
- Technology experience: Proficiency with analysis tools & data.
