The Head Women’s Softball Coach will manage an intercollegiate softball program to include recruiting, instructing, and coaching students and coordinating various program related activities. The head coach of Women’s Softball is required to abide by the rules and regulations established by Bay College and the National Junior College Athletic Association. The additional responsibility of the position will be one of the following , determined based on the strengths, experience, and qualifications of the selected candidate:

This structure allows the role to combine head coaching responsibilities with a complementary position that best aligns with the candidate’s professional skills and the needs of the athletic department. The posting below outlines the specific responsibilities associated with each potential area of responsibility in this position.

 

Head Softball Coach:

Teach sport skills, condition and motivate student-athletes to positive action and utilize effective strategies to produce a successful student experience.

Monitor student-athlete attendance, academic progress and graduation.

Oversee and monitor the conduct of the student-athletes and under the direction of the Athletic Director, oversee discipline of student-athletes if necessary.

Monitor recruitment needs, recruit a sufficient number of new student-athletes annually and retain current student-athletes, in accordance with NJCAA rules and regulations, through scouting, attending games/tournaments, and home visits.

Assist student-athletes going through eligibility requirements/compliance paperwork.

Plan, prepare and administer practice plans and competitive strategy plans.

Work with the Athletic Director to arrange team schedules, including travel to games and practice.

Work with the Athletic Director to ensure game day operations are in place, including officials, venue and trainers.

Provide statistics and reports to the Athletic Director, Region XIII , and the NJCAA when needed.

Direct all aspects, areas, and components of the team.

Represents the sport program at various institutional programs and externally to the media, government agencies, funding agencies, students, parents, and the community.

Support the vision/mission of Bay College by promoting student success, culture of success, and community success.

Ability to maintain an effective sports program

Student-Athlete Success Coach Responsibilities: Responsible for coordinating the supports of student-athletes including orienting students regarding admissions, placement testing, registration processes, policies, procedures, resources, and programs; reviewing academic records, placement tests, and other standardized test results with students in order to develop course selections consistent with their career choices and degree requirements; and developing a term-by-term schedule and an outline of a program of study. The Student-Athlete Success Coach will develop student and employee trainings designed to improve student success. This position will also coordinate study tables for the athletic department. This position will assist with the overall retention and persistence goals of the College. This position will help support students who have challenges navigating their academic and personal success.

This position acts as a critical component of the advising and retention process for all student-athletes. The Student-Athlete Success Coach works closely with students’ faculty advisors to develop an academic plan for graduation from Bay College, transfer to another institution, or secure employment after attending Bay. The Student-Athlete Success Coach supports students by facilitating supplemental assistance from other departments across campus such as Financial Aid, Counseling Services, Accessibility, etc and provides proactive outreach with students at risk of not returning to Bay each semester to ensure educational goals are met. This position also manages the students’ academic plans in the Advising Module of the student information system

 

Provide individualized and group academic advising, coaching, and student support in a proactive, personalized, and integrated way.

Assist students with academic, career, and personal planning, including identifying educational and career goals, selecting appropriate programs of study, and registering for courses that meet program requirements.

Collaborate with Bay College faculty and staff to develop academic plans, support student retention, and coordinate timely interventions to prevent course failure and program stop-out.

Support students in navigating the transition to college, addressing issues such as homesickness, self-advocacy, and overcoming personal or academic challenges.

Encourage and guide students in developing self-awareness regarding values, identity, strengths, passions, and cultural awareness/humility.

Refer students to and encourage engagement with campus and community resources, leadership opportunities, student organizations, and professional experiences.

Develop, facilitate, and coordinate workshops on student success topics in collaboration with appropriate college employees.

Act as the primary contact for students experiencing academic or personal challenges, advocating for resources and coordinating support.

Assist with student orientation programming ( SOAR ) and other initiatives that support the first-year student experience.

Use data to plan and improve student supports, programming, and outreach strategies.

Compliance/game day management responsibilities

Chief goals include maintaining institutional control of the compliance system for college’s athletic program, and responsible for the planning and execution of home game day operations.

Maintains institutional control of the compliance system for college’s athletic program. ( NJCAA Admin Portal, and use J1 to pull data).

Develops internal College procedures and policies to monitor and ensure compliance with all NJCAA and Region XII rules and regulations.

Develops the Student Athlete Handbook with coordination with the Athletic Director for compliance and eligibility.

Develop the Coaching Handbook in coordination with the Athletic Director for compliance and eligibility.

Verifies and determines student eligibility to participate in NJCAA intercollegiate athletics.

Investigates and reviews alleged NJCAA and region rule violations and communicates findings to appropriate parties (self-reporting).

Comply with the NJCAA audit process and procedures.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of NJCAA rules and regulations for compliance and eligibility. Communicate updates and best practices to the Athletic Director.

Responsible for the planning and execution of home game day operations (all athletic events).

Recruit, assign and pay of officials, official scorers, announcers, timers, statisticians and game day student personnel.

Coordinates use of all assigned athletic facilities by managing the daily operations, staffing and scheduling of all athletic events and practices.

Responsible for overseeing the rental of athletic facilities and communicating the specific details with maintenance, events and calendar staff.

Responsible for data entry process for online practice/game schedules.

Ensures that facilities are set up and ready for all events and practices.

Maintains relationships with internal and outside vendors using the facilities.

Assist Director of Athletics with planning and programming of facility use.

Coordinate and facilitate set-up and tear-down for home contests (all athletic events).

Administrative duties as assigned (copies, mailings, phone calls, hotel reservations, etc.)

Assist the Athletic Director with fundraising efforts (Corporate partners, Booster Club, Kids Club, etc.)

Coordinate and facilitate all aspects of the Norse Force.

Complete other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

Bachelors degree

Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community

Experience developing and facilitating workshops

Experience in utilizing a diverse range of technologies and ability to learn various technology resources

Prior experience coaching and supporting students

Event and program management experience

College coaching or playing experience

Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the sports program

Knowledge of NJCAA regulations and guidelines governing recruitment and retention of student-athletes

Ability to lead and guide student-athletes

Valid State of Michigan driver’s license

Ability to adapt to change in processes and procedures
