     TITLE: Softball Varsity Coach

    OVERVIEW AND PURPOSE

    The Softball Varsity Head Coach is responsible for coaching student-athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition. The coach motivates student-athletes to develop an appreciation of the sport. Works closely with student-athletes to develop good character on and off the field. Assists teachers, counselors, and other school personnel with student-athlete attendance, academics, and behavior in and out of softball season.

    STUDENT ELIGIBILITY AND PROGRAM SIZE

    • Junior Varsity - Varsity
    • 32 student-athletes

    LENGTH OF PROGRAM

    Girls In-Season:

    • Weeks: 13
    • Contests: 28 or 26 + 1 tournament
    • Monday-Saturday

    Out-of-Season:

    • Limited Contact Fall: 12 practices
    • Limited Contact Spring: 20 practices
    • Summer

    MEETINGS AND ACTIVITIES

    • Holds organizational meetings for the team and coaches
    • Participates in special activities to include banquets, awards nights, and pep assemblies
    • Attends annual athletic department meetings and seasonal player/parent meetings
    • Attends staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance
    • Maintains certifications via NFHS/IHSAA
    • Participates in meetings with lower-level programs and feeder programs
    • Evaluates assistant coaches
    • Leads program in a community service project

    RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

    • Assesses players' skills and assigns team positions
    • Develops a regular practice schedule and organizes practice time to provide both individual and team development
    • Works with the athletic director in scheduling facilities for practices and competition
    • Assigns duties to an assistant coach as necessary
    • Coaches and instructs players, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport
    • Observes players during competitions and practices to determine the needs for individual or team improvement
    • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior and provides proper supervision of athletes at all times

    ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Monitors the academic performance of team members to ensure that eligibility requirements are met
    • Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete's injury
    • Encourages players to play multiple sports
    • Follows IHSAA regulations governing the athletic program
    • Models sportsman-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators
    • Follows established procedures for the proper care, maintenance, and requisitioning of equipment, supplies, and uniforms
    • Maintains eligibility forms, emergency data cards, insurance records, equipment inventory, and other related records
    • Participates in the Red Devil Strength and Conditioning Program year round

    OTHER INFORMATION

    • Conducts a youth camp during the summer
    • Conducts fundraiser(s) when permitted and approved
    • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the school principal, athletic director, or other appropriate administrators
    • Works closely with the feeder program to foster growth and athletic development of future student-athletes
    • Is a participating member of state and/or national coach association(s)
    • Provides transportation for team members via the Tri-Creek activity bus when applicable

    QUALIFICATIONS (SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED):

    • Previous coaching and/or playing experience in softball preferred.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of softball fundamentals, rules, and strategies.
    • Ability to motivate, supervise, and develop student-athletes.
    • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to establish positive relationships with students, parents, staff, officials, and community members.
    • Must meet all IHSAA, corporation, and state requirements for coaching assignments.

    REPORTS TO: Athletic Director

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Ability to stand, walk, run, and actively participate in practices and competitions for extended periods.
    • Ability to demonstrate athletic skills and techniques.
    • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
    • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
    • Ability to travel to practices, contests, meetings, and other program activities.
