We are seeking experienced and highly motivated members to join the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury scorers table staff to assist team members for select Suns and Mercury home games. The scorers table staff is comprised of a four-person crew: an official scorer, scoreboard operator, game clock operator and shot clock operator.

What You Will Do:

  • Must remain unbiased in all ways in carrying out duties of the scorers table staff
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance
  • Act with professionalism in all interactions with team personnel and game officials
  • Official Scorer
    1. Strict adherence to the duties of the position as laid out by the NBA-issued Official Scorers’ Manual, which includes but is not limited to: The recording of names, numbers and positions of all players who enter the game (making sure all players have been declared active); the recording of field goals made, free throws made and missed and a running summary of points scored; the recording of the personal and technical fouls called on each player; the recording of timeouts charged to each team
    2. Exhibit diligence and focus on detail to prevent any errors in the keeping of the scorebook and administration of the active lists
  • Scoreboard Operator: Strict adherence to the duties of the position and rules of the game as laid out by the NBA-issued Official Scorers’ Manual and Clock Operators’ Manual, which includes but is not limited to: Making sure the score and team fouls reflected on the scoreboard are accurate; Setting and starting the timeout clock
    1.   • Clock Operator (Game/Shot): Strict adherence to the duties of the position and rules of the game as laid out by the NBA-issued Clock Operators’ Manual, which includes but is not limited to: Starting and stopping the clock in-game as if the Game Officials’ Precision Timing System does not exist; Setting the clock pregame, at timeouts and at halftime as appropriate; Starting, stopping and resetting the shot clock as appropriate
    1. Strict adherence to the duties of the position and rules of the game as laid out by the NBA-issued Clock Operators’ Manual, which includes but is not limited to: Starting and stopping the clock in-game as if the Game Officials’ Precision Timing System does not exist; Setting the clock pregame, at timeouts and at halftime as appropriate; Starting, stopping and resetting the shot clock as appropriate
    2. Exhibit diligence and focus on detail to prevent any errors in the in-game operation of the clocks

What We Need From Our Scorers Table Crew:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the NBA-issued Official Scorers’ Manual as well as appropriate NBA/WNBA memos
  • Must be available to work nights, weekends and holidays for Suns and Mercury home games
  • Must pass a background check conducted by the NBA prior to being on scorer’s table; subject to annual background checks from the NBA
  • Communication skills—required to communicate with game officials and other personnel in a fast-moving and high-pressure environment
  • Teamwork skills in working in concert with other scorer’s table personnel
  • Needs to be able to quickly perform simple arithmetic
  • Privy to confidential information that is not to be shared
  • Official Scorer: Ability to follow and record the fast-paced action of the game while regularly cross-checking his/her own record-keeping with the statisticians’ and have vision able to follow the action of the game and read the display monitor while at the same time writing in and maintaining the scorebook
  • Scoreboard and Clock (Game/Shot) Operators: Must master the Tissot system that the clocks/score run on and have vision able to follow the action of the game and react by hitting appropriate buttons on scoreboard control interface

Experience/ Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience working in game administration (referee, scorekeeping, etc.)
  • Official Scorer: Prior experience keeping a basketball scorebook required
  • Scoreboard Operator: Prior experience operating a basketball scoreboard required
  • Clock Operator (Game/Shot): Prior experience operating a basketball game/shot clock required

  • This position works mainly indoors, removed from extreme weather; exposure to weather is <5%
