Position Specifics

The Girls Basketball Head Coach is responsible for various aspects of the Girls Basketball Program, such as recruiting within the school, scheduling opponents (in conjunction with the Athletic Director), training, and coaching team members. The Girls Basketball Head Coach must abide by the NEPSAC and regulations and the rules and regulations set by Darrow School’s Board of Trustees, Head of School, Senior Administrative Team, and Director of Athletics.

This position could include on-campus housing for the right candidate. Housing is contingent upon the ability to perform residential duty in one of our dormitories.

Responsibilities of this position include

Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions, to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect, and good sportsmanship

Coordinate the development, promotion, and retention of the girls' basketball program

Work as a liaison between Darrow’s Admissions Office and the prospective student-athletes.

Assist the Director of Athletics with the scheduling of games and coordination of team logistics

Hold organizational meetings for team prospects and encourage potential athletes to participate in the girls' basketball program.

Ensure all girls' basketball program goals align with the overall objectives of the Athletic Department

Develop a regular practice schedule and organize practice time to provide both individual and team development

Hold a preseason meeting with student-athletes before the first official game

Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and trips off campus; encourage sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation

Take all necessary precautions to protect student-athletes, equipment, and facilities, including protecting students from hazing/bullying

Serve as a liaison between the NCAA and the point person in the college recruitment process.

Participate in special activities, including senior night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.

Conferences with parents/guardians, as necessary, regarding the athletic performance of their students

Follow established procedures in the event of an athlete's injury by working with Athletic Training staff.

Represent Darrow School and the Girls Basketball program professionally within our surrounding community

Maintain nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

Attend staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance

Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or other appropriate administrator

The position requires an extensive amount of walking around campus and through buildings, climbing stairs, and driving Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree preferred 2-4 years of experience coaching basketball at the high school level required (head coaching experience preferred) Must possess effective coaching techniques and skills.  Must possess knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of the sport.  Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, governing organizations (NEPSAC), opponents, officials, staff, parents, and students.  This position does not offer visa sponsorship. Additional Knowledge/Desirable Skills:

Comprehensive knowledge of the game is paramount, in addition to extensive knowledge of current coaching techniques Knowledge of NEPSAC rules Demonstrated ability to instruct and supervise student-athletes Demonstrated history of placing student-athletes in college programs Must possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal Exceptional organizational, administrative, and leadership skills  Must be a solutions-oriented person Must take pride in all the little details that help young women be successful in life and in school Must possess the ability to relate to students and to teach them on and off the court Must be willing to accept a high level of accountability Must possess the ability to assess players and coaches effectively Should be a progressive thinker, but a believer in planning and preparation Must possess a valid driver’s license; ability to drive the school’s vehicles (training will be provided)  Commitment to the 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week life of a boarding school  An educational philosophy consistent with the mission of the school Physical Requirements Commensurate with experience and willingness to perform other duties.
