OVERVIEW

The Sports Bra promotes, empowers, and supports girls and women in sports and their fans in the communities where its bars are located by showing women's sports exclusively on its TVs.

Our fast-growing brand of bars and restaurants offers traditional, vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free menu items, as well as alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages sourced, whenever possible, from women-owned and women-operated businesses.

We provide a welcoming place of belonging for historically marginalized community members and donate at least 1% of all proceeds to organizations that promote access, representation, and inclusivity for girls, women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ community members.

Every member of our team is expected to serve as a role model by exhibiting our values and advancing our mission.

POSITION SUMMARY

This role is an opportunity to step in as the financial backbone of a fast-growing, multi-unit franchise organization and national brand leader in women's sports hospitality.

As Controller, you'll own the full accounting function—from month-end close to year-end readiness—while building the systems, controls, and processes that will carry the brand through its next stage of growth.

You'll partner closely with Operations, HR, Marketing, and Leadership to translate real-world activity into clean financials, scalable workflows, and reliable reporting. This is a hands-on, high-visibility role for someone who thrives in a dynamic, resource-conscious environment and wants to shape the financial infrastructure of a rapidly expanding franchise system.

REPORTING REQUIREMENTS

The Controller reports directly to the CEO, with oversight from the Fractional CFO.

Financial Operations and Month-End Close

  • Lead the full monthly close across multiple entities, delivering timely, accurate, GAAP-aligned financial statements.

  • Prepare and review reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, depreciation, amortization, and consolidation entries.
  • Maintain a clean, audit-ready general ledger and complete supporting documentation.

Inventory Oversight and Analysis

  • Oversee inventory accounting processes, including valuation, reconciliation, and accurate reporting.
  • Partner with Operations to ensure inventory controls are consistently implemented and followed.
  • Perform regular inventory analysis and prepare weekly merchandise reports, including variance analysis, aging, and shrinkage.
  • Support restaurant teams with monthly merchandise inventory by providing documentation and explaining inventory count variances.
  • Develop and maintain reporting that provides visibility into inventory performance and potential risks.

Systems, Controls, and Process Design

  • Assess, build, and improve accounting processes, controls, and workflows that support franchise and restaurant growth.
  • Evaluate existing workflows and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and accountability.
  • Document and maintain accounting policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), checklists, and process flowcharts.
  • Strengthen internal controls and reduce the risk of financial errors in partnership with the CFO.
  • Apply operational knowledge and historical context to improve processes in practical, scalable ways that support organizational growth.

Franchise and Multi-Entity Support

  • Maintain accounting records for multiple legal entities, including intercompany transactions.
  • Manage franchise-related accounting, including Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) requirements, franchise fees, brand fund activity, and related reconciliations.
  • Serve as the primary contact for franchise royalty and brand development fee accounting, reconciliations, and issue resolution.

Compliance, Reporting, and Audit

  • Prepare financial reports for the CFO, auditors, and tax advisors.
  • Assemble Prepared by Client (PBC) documentation and coordinate annual audits and fundraising-related financial reviews.
  • Maintain organized, audit-ready documentation for contracts, insurance, licenses, and compliance records.
  • Support state registrations, franchise compliance requirements, and financial disclosures.
  • Assist the CFO with annual budgets, forecasts, and financial presentations.

Year-End Close

  • Lead the year-end close process, ensuring all accounts and schedules are complete and audit-ready.
  • Prepare year-end workpapers, account analyses, and supporting documentation.
  • Identify and resolve accounting issues, process gaps, and documentation deficiencies before deadlines.

Cross-Functional Partnership, Training, and Process Ownership

  • Build strong collaborative relationships with Operations, HR, Marketing, and department managers to promote financial clarity, alignment, and shared accountability.
  • Provide ongoing training and guidance on financial processes, policies, and best practices.
  • Help managers understand financial results and their financial responsibilities by establishing clear expectations around budgeting, expense management, purchasing, and related workflows.
  • Translate operational activities and new initiatives into scalable financial systems, controls, and reporting processes.
  • Drive cross-functional projects to completion and ensure decisions result in documented processes, effective controls, and measurable outcomes.

QUALITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five (5) or more years of progressive accounting experience, including Controller or Senior Accountant responsibilities.
  • Multi-unit franchise or hospitality accounting experience required.
