Position: JV Softball Coach

Position Summary:

The Junior Varsity Softball Coach is responsible for developing student-athletes through instruction, skill development, and positive leadership while supporting the overall goals of the Middlesex County Public Schools athletic program. The coach promotes sportsmanship, teamwork, academic success, and character development while preparing student-athletes for advancement to the varsity program. The coach ensures compliance with Virginia High School League (VHSL), School Board, and division policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the game of softball and coaching fundamentals.
  • Ability to organize, supervise, and motivate student-athletes in a positive learning environment.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the Varsity Softball Coach, Athletic Director, school administration, students, parents, and staff.
  • Must satisfy all Virginia High School League (VHSL) coaching requirements and division employment requirements.

Essential Functions:

  • Plan, organize, and conduct effective practices that emphasize skill development, teamwork, conditioning, and sportsmanship.
  • Instruct student-athletes in the rules, strategies, techniques, and fundamentals of softball.
  • Assist in developing players for progression into the varsity program.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and positive environment that supports student growth and achievement.
  • Supervise student-athletes during practices, games, travel, and other team activities.
  • Monitor the academic progress, attendance, and conduct of student-athletes, encouraging academic success and good citizenship.
  • Ensure the proper use, care, inventory, and security of athletic equipment and facilities.
  • Communicate effectively with student-athletes, parents, school staff, and administration regarding team expectations and activities.
  • Adhere to all VHSL regulations, School Board policies, division procedures, and school athletic guidelines.
  • Attend coaches' meetings, professional development opportunities, and other required activities.
  • Perform other duties related to the athletic program as assigned by the Athletic Director or Principal.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of softball rules, strategies, player development, and safety practices.
  • Ability to teach fundamental and advanced softball skills appropriate for the junior varsity level.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, colleagues, and community members.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Commitment to promoting equity, inclusion, and positive sportsmanship.

Special Requirements:

  • Must meet all VHSL coaching certification requirements, including current CPR, First Aid, and concussion education as required.
  • Must successfully complete all required school division employment and safety training.
  • Must successfully complete all required background checks.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, holiday tournaments, and travel as required during the athletic season.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous coaching experience or competitive softball playing experience preferred.
  • Experience working with middle or high school-aged students preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, run, bend, kneel, throw, catch, and demonstrate softball skills for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry athletic equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to travel with the team to practices, games, and tournaments.

Supervision Exercised:

Supervises junior varsity softball student-athletes during practices, competitions, team travel, and other approved team activities.
