The University of Montana Western, a four-year NAIA institution in Dillon, Montana, is seeking an Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach. UMW seeks a dynamic leader to build on its tradition of women’s basketball excellence and lead the program to sustained success at the conference and national levels.
This position assists the head coach with all aspects of the women’s basketball program; supporting student-athletes in both their academic and athletic development. The assistant coach reports to the head coach and is responsible for aiding them with recruitment and retention of student-athletes, roster management, skill development, practice and game planning, team travel, and cultivating a positive and competitive team culture. This role may also includes some teaching responsibilities, with scheduling considerations to accommodate coaching commitments.
An associate's degree is required, along with a minimum of one to three years of collegiate, professional, club, or high school women’s basketball coaching experience. The ideal candidate must demonstrate the ability to build relationships and support the head coach's program, as well as assist with the recruitment and retention of student-athletes. Strong leadership skills and excellent interpersonal communication are essential. A commitment to the total welfare of student-athletes, both academically and athletically, is required, as well as a proven track record of supporting the development of a successful program that emphasizes academic achievement, athletic excellence, and personal growth. ESSENTIAL DUTIES As the Assistant Coach for Women’s Basketball the responsibilities assigned will include the following specific duties:
- Assist the Head Women’s Basketball Coach in developing and maintaining a competitive and high-character NAIA women’s basketball program. - Ensure full compliance with all NAIA, Frontier Conference, university, state, and departmental rules, regulations, and policies. - Support the identification, recruitment, and retention of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes who reflect the values of Montana Western. - Contribute to the academic development and success of student-athletes by promoting strong study habits and monitoring academic progress. - Assist in planning, organizing, and conducting effective practices and game strategies that enhance team performance and player development. - Support the Head Coach in organizing and executing fundraising initiatives and donor engagement efforts. - Represent the women’s basketball program in athletic department events, campus functions, and community service activities. - Help coordinate team travel and ensure proper supervision and conduct of student-athletes during road trips. - Model and promote sportsmanship, integrity, and responsible conduct among coaches and student-athletes on and off the court. - Foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment that is free from harassment or discrimination. - Promote the Montana Western Women’s Basketball program through public relations efforts, community outreach, and positive engagement on campus. - Maintain valid CPR and First Aid certifications throughout the duration of coaching duties. - If operating university vehicles, complete the State of Montana’s vehicle safety and defensive driving course at least once every two academic years. - Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned by the Head Women’s Basketball Coach and/or Director of Athletics.
